Come experience a taste of Brazilian Culture and try CAPOEIRA!

Capoeira: is an exciting Afro-Brasilian martial art anciently concealed as a dance. This art form was first introduced to the United States almost twenty-five years ago.

Capoeira has become one of Brasil's top national sports (second only to soccer), Capoeira combines floor movements resembling breakdancing with agile acrobatic movements and kicks of grace and beauty.

Capoiera is a great way to learn about Brazilian Culture! Come out and give it a try!

Taste of Brazil

More than 60 Brazuca members discovered the Brazilian cuisine by tasting a typical Brazilian meal in our "Taste of Brazil" event, held on Friday, November 14th, from 10am to 1pm, in the International House kitchen and TV lounge. (Click here for the UNCW map, where you can locate the Int'l House.) FREE FOOD, sponsored by Brazuca, the Office of International Business and the Multicultural Center. Music provided by the Multicultural Center.

The meal included white rice, farofa, potato salad with peas and feijoada (a stew of black beans with pork meat), as well Guaraná Antartica, a famous Brazilian soft drink. Desserts included brigadeiro, pudim and paçoquinha.

Members not taking Portuguese this semester could choose one of the following tasting sessions to attend: from 10-11am; 11am-12pm; and 12-1pm. We apologize for the lack of time and space on campus for students to learn how to cook a Brazilian dish, as initially proposed.

Latino Film Festival: "Not By Chance"

On Wednesday, October 15th, at 7 pm, Brazuca sponsored the exhibition of the Brazilian Film "Not By Chance" ("Não por Acaso") in Lumina Theater. A 2007 movie, "Not By Chance" was directed by Philippe Barcinski, lasted for 100 min, and had English subtitles. Tickets were free.

"Do we control our own destiny? Can a twist of fate change who we are? These are questions at the core of this fascinating and dramatic character study set on the vibrant streets of São Paulo, Brazil. Enio thrives on order. A middle-aged traffic controller who lives alone in a cramped apartment, he is happiest when applying mathematical formulae to the potentially random behavior of people in cars. Across town, thirty-something Pedro builds billiard tables. When he's not diagramming the geometric motion of pool balls or competing in billiard tournaments, he spends time with his adoring girlfriend. Life is organized and predictable for these two strangers. But when a dreadful tragedy rocks their world, Enio and Pedro are forced out of the routine existence they have worked so hard to create. "American student life in Brazil"

Brazuca held its second Fall 2008 meeting on Thursday, October 9th, 7 p.m., in Cape Fear Room (room 2019, upstairs in University Union). About 15 of our members listened and questioned American and Brazilian students with study experience in Brazil about how is the life of a student there. Anna Hardy was our guest American student. Free food included. Music provided by the Multicultural Center.

"Platanos and Collard Greens" at Kenan Auditorium

"Platanos and Collard Greens", a romantic comedic play about a Latin girl and an African American guy, performed on Friday, Sept. 26, 7:30pm, at Kenan Auditorium.

According the NYTimes, the play is "a modern day West Side Story... has developed a huge following among people who come to see it again and again". For more information, check the play's official website.

Please notice that, by joining the play, you made Brazuca possible. Part of the event revenue fund our meetings.

Tickets were sold at the Centro Hispano office (University Union, upstairs, room 2021). UNCW student tickets are $5, faculty/staff $10 and general public $20.

Latino Film Festival: "Rolling Family"

Brazuca and Centro Hispano invited you to watch "Rolling Family", which played at Lumina Theater (Student Fisher Center) on Thursday, September 25, at 6pm. The movie is a multi-country production which involves Brazil. It is in Spanish and is part of the Latin American, Latino and Caribbean Film Festival. Everybody could bring your family and friends. Free admission.

"Rolling Family" is a warm, vivacious comedy about love, life, laughter and the compromises we make for family. When Emila, (Gracina) an Argentinian grandmother, is invited to be the 'matron of honor' at the wedding of a distant niece she invites her whole family to accompany her. They set off in a 1956 Chevy Viking camper on a cross country journey to the border of Argentina and Brazil. Between the starting point of Buenos Aires and the destination of Misiones, all the anger, sorrow, attraction and warmth between four cramped generations comes to the surface. Brazilian Movie in Lumina: "The Year My Parents Went on Vacation"

"The Year My Parents Went on Vacation" (O Ano em que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias), a 2006 Brazilian movie, was played at Lumina Theather on Wednesday, September 17th, 2008, at 7pm. The movie is about a young boy thrust into the alien environment of São Paulo's Jewish community when his politicized parents are forced to flee Brazil. Tickets were free.

"Tourism in Brazil"

Brazuca held its first Fall 2008 meeting on Thursday, Sept. 11th, 6 p.m., in Cape Fear Room (University Union). More than 25 attendees discovered which places should they visit when travelling to Brazil. Brazilians students profiled Brazil's main destinations in a 1 hour presentation. Free food was included. Music was provided by the Multicultural Center.

Two Brazuca meetings were held in the Spring 2008.

Besides the start-up meeting, in which many organizational aspects of the club were discussed, we exhibited the movie Elite Squad, a semi-fictional portray of the Special Police Operations Batallion of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police.

Brazuca is the best way for UNCW Americans students to get in contact with the Brazilian culture.

The club's meetings present many aspects of the Brazilian life to the American student. If you intend to study in Brazil in the near future, Brazuca meetings are the best way for you to become used to the Brazilian culture. By joining our meetings, you will adapt faster to Brazil when arriving there, so you will have more time to explore and enjoy your experience in this country.

Brazuca also provides exposure of the Brazilian culture to the university and to the community at large.

Founded in 2004, our student organization is supported by the Centro Hispanico/Hispanic Latino Multicultural Center of The Universiy of North Carolina Wilmington.

Any undergraduate and graduate major, faculty, or staff from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington can join the Eclub, regardless of major. The membership is free, although there might be fees for specific events.
